In time of packing and preparation, I naturally look back with some 'perspective of the past four months, and take stock of mind than I am about to return home. From the material point of view not much more than I had with me when I left, some new clothes, a collection of memories on the wall in the living room, three gifts received from friends last week as goodbye gifts, furnishings varied, and some souvenirs. From the standpoint of experience, the list is rather longer and more detailed process and requires a concentrated effort to encourage that at the time of the rosé wine of dubious origin and the evocative name " Wild Pig". More and more elegant Boar , however.
The first rank among the things I learned during this time certainly goes to project management and knowledge of industrial processes to be clear, I now have a precise idea of the whole life cycle of a project, with a note of reproach to my university who had not taken care minimum level of educational at the time, even though I know I'm far from being able to manage a project of the complexity of those for whom I worked at Waacs. In fact I realized at this time of how important knowledge of all the design process as a whole, you can even say that a designer has the right to call themselves an expert and competitive to the extent that it is aware of this process, and to the extent that it is able to manage projects more or less complex. Compared to this, knowing how to make beautiful designs, beautiful render, or quickly model, are details.
In second place I would be able to put the knowledge of how to run a studio. To give an idea of the situation, Waacs is a company composed of seven persons, excluding trainees, which produces a volume of about thirty projects per year, some of which has a budget of six figures, for the multinationals of the caliber of Henkel and the Microsoft. There are only two: either those seven are transgenic, or they know pretty well how to run a studio and how do people ride the rhythms of Pantani uphill. I opt for the second, and mark Basecamp, an online business management platform that allows you to optimize the work and keep track of everything going on without producing a single sheet of paper. Futuristic, but not for everyone obviously.
In third place we put the technique. I learned how to get a job at eleven and hand rendered at six, putting to the test with a posteriori knowledge that I could still do something more. Anglophones call challenge yourself, and give a good idea. I learned to study a program in a day, and then consider only one tool among many in the service of the idea, which should never let hinder the limits of the technique you have.
Then there's one thing that does not fall in the rankings, because they are too important to be included in the group with the others, but it is most of all: the knowledge that a few feet from you, there is always someone who could do better what you did, and much faster. Fuck him.
Edit: after returning to the studio to finish some things, I have received an assessment encouraging, and a CD as a gift that really made me move, I understand that friendships are the most precious thing that you can bring home. For more jealously preserve any privilege.
